How Obamacare Will Return Nancy Pelosi To House Speakership
As Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives ponder whether Nancy Pelosi deserves to be the next Speaker, look no further than the creation and preservation of the Affordable Care Act as to why she will be selected.
Though there are rumblings about whether Pelosi will face a challenge to what is expected to be her return as House Speaker, her legacy bringing President Barack Obama’s signature legislative achievement across the goal line is unmatched. And her supporters are reminding everybody in recent days of Pelosi’s legislative prowess then and now.
“ Nancy Pelosi was the architect of the passage of the Affordable Care Act ,” U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz told MNBC’s Chuck Todd on MTP Daily last week. “She deserves and gets the credit for that.”
To be sure, the ACA has expanded health coverage to more than 20 million Americans, but the law’s patient protections hit closer to home for six times as many people. Democrats used that to win seats and take control of the House thanks to Pelosi.
“The case is very clear,” Wasserman Schultz said. “Nancy Pelosi is a good portion of the reason that we had the issue that won those seats for so many of these members. We had a huge victory all across America. And that was primarily over protecting pre-existing conditions and making sure that people have access to healthcare.”
