What is Sleep Apnea?
Sleep Apnea is a common but a potentially serious disorder. It occurs when the upper air passage is blocked repeatedly during sleep. When this happens it either slows down or completely stops airflow. Thus, sleep may be irregularly interrupted. It may also impact your quality of life and it can result in some health complications.
Sleep apnea is characterized mainly by the pauses in breathing. Here are the 2 main types of sleep apnea:
1. Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)
This is relatively the more common form of sleep apnea. The walls of the throat tend to relax causing it to narrow down. When this happens, it interrupts normal breathing.
OSA is categorized into the characteristic of breathing interruption. OSA apnoea is a total blockage of the airway for 10 seconds or more. OSA hypopnoea is an airflow reduction of more than 50% for 10 seconds or more.
2. Central Sleep Apnea (CSA)
This is the more serious form of sleep apnea. In CSA, the air passage is not blocked. However, the brain fails to send a signal for the muscles to breathe. This may be caused by the instability of the respiratory control center.
Untreated Sleep Apnea may lead to health complications such as glaucoma or heart attack. Some cases may also result in cognitive and behavioral disorders.
